Can anyone recommend any well written book on training? I am training with Carlos Rojas and am learning alot. I was wondering if there was anything that I could read that would be complimentary to his training maybe it would help me understand some of the philosophy. Or is most of this stuff just handed down and learned through good dog training?

Any good reads let me know.

Lyn,

Books are one thing but too much is lost with the little important things.

Gottfried Dildei has a tape out on motivational obedience and IMO these are the best ones I have seen. He also has other tapes and some books.

If you are interested Sally can tell you where to order the video.

Thank you Steve. I can see how alot would get lost in the translation. A video would be great! I learn alot from watching Carlos work the dog, but to really be able to apply I need to understand it.
He does a good job of explaining things sometimes I still don't get it though Knocking Knocking Some of the things are very similar to what I have done for years in my obedience training and some are very different.

We have Gottfried's DVD's too. Although they were helpful, I got more from the seminar.

Lyn.

Carlos is a pretty good trainer and you have a few good ones in your area included Jim Hill he started training with me when he was in his last yeat of school and stayed with me till we movered to Fla. 32 years ago but he is in Pa.

I don't know how far you are from T Floyd but when any of those guys run into a problem they usually go to T. for a solution.

One thing with the videos...if you don't understand something you can back it up and watch it a few times.

Do you live in the Cherry Hill area ?

I am about 45 minutes from Cherry Hill. I am only training with Carlos for obedience right now, We are not having any particular problems and he is moving along with Carlos's help. I do not train protection with any of my dogs. I needed help cleaning up my boy's OB and wanted a new perspective, he just wasn't moving along the way I would have liked. From what I understand T Floyd is not too far from me maybe an hour. I like Carlos I feel confident that he knows what he is doing, it is just some of the techniques used are new to me and different than what I am used to. So I would like to learn more about them. I am going to put a BH on my female in the fall. She already has beautiful heal work he is just teaching me the pattern and everything else for the BH and also helping me make her a solid consistent performer.

I hope to train my next dog in all 3 phases of the sport. But for right now I am sticking with agility and obedience.

I will get some of the recommended videos and check them out.

I have one of the Gottfried CD's. I love it. There were a couple of ah ha moments where I went "so that's why they(trainers) do that". I like being able to stop and go back- a bazillion times if needed.

I would love to go to one of his seminars but I think I live in a black hole.

I am somewhat surprised that there are no major league seminars in this area, including No. VA. There are about five clubs up there and the Tidewater area has three or four clubs.
